Container Theatre, Singapore
2006-2009 Shipping containers are gutted and used as Lego-style building blocks to build a flexible container theatre seating from 100 to 500 people. Tropical heat load was reduced with extensive canvas shade screens and vertical gardens. |
One of the biggest issues is tropical conditions on a metal honeycomb. How to ventilate and shade such a unforgiving element? The sketch designs show the solution- multiple shade leaves and extensive cutting back of the metal walls to increase cross ventilation.. but now, how to solve the issues of acoustic isolation for performance?

While developing the designs I was lucky to see first hand the Nomadic Gallery at the Singapore Biennale, design by Shigeru Ban. it was a wonderful experience to walk through the spaces of a master.
This is an ongoing project working with Live Media Theatre and the skills of Jon de Rule, Bhavna Soni Shivpuri and Timothy Wong. |
